The North Yorkshire Moors National
Park is located on the North East Corner of North Yorkshire - England's largest
county. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty protected by law, covering
heather moor land and steep sided valleys carved out by glaciation during the ice age.
From the home of Britain's most scenic railway line to the delights of the
ancient fishing port of Whitby, locations for the Harry Potter films and the TV
series "Heartbeat", miles of walks along heather moor land rich in wildlife and
through valleys of daffodils, there is much to see and do. For more ideas see
the Things to Do page.Whitby is located just over 90 minutes drive from Bradford and Leeds, 2 hours from Manchester, 3 hours from Birmingham and 4 1/2 hours from London. If you wish to estimate your journey, The AA have a handy on-line route planner. Visitors wishing to travel by train can travel to York and then by bus, or Darlington via the East Coast Mainline and then take the train to Sleights and Whitby via Middlesbrough. Park, you can enjoy a rich coastline featuring the highest cliffs in England at
Bolby; Captain Cook's home village of Staithes and museum at Great Ayton; Enjoy
shopping and the Minster in the city of York; James Herriot country and the
market town of Thirsk; all ideally placed for a day's visit from your base near
Whitby.
